Activism for Young People

Phil Hoose (1993) in It’s Our World Too: Stories of Young People Who Are Making a Difference included a section on activism for young people. He suggested that students who want to make a difference follow six steps:

Choose a project you really care about.

Find others to work with.

Write a vision statement.

Keep adults from taking over.

Conduct research.

Create a working plan.

The book includes specific tools for change-making, such as how to write a letter, use a petition to build support, use the media, ask for money and other support, conduct a boycott, lobby, protest, and demonstrate (Hoose, 1993). Teachers can use these steps to help their gifted students select a project that will be meaningful to them and further build and develop their sensitivity and empathy for others.
